Going to Town
Readers may be disappointed that we have not included a particular shop that they or their parents patronised, but it would be impossible to cover so many in one small book. Smithford Street, which ran almost the length of the Upper and Lower Precincts, had a total of 52 shops in 1937 and that is without counting the public houses, theatres, cafes, workshops, insurance brokers and other service providers. The choice has been a personal one and includes Anslow’s, Fishy Moores, Hogarth’s, Coventry markets, Owen Owen, Tuck and Blakemore and many more. This survey of shops will bring back many memories of a time when the city centre had a vibrancy that it lacks today.
