The Eastern Green History Group was formed in the latter half of 2006 with the aim of being a forum for people interested in the area of Coventry called Eastern Green. Information will be gathered, recorded and made available in a variety of formats. The scope will cover the general history of the area, interesting buildings & farms, roads and the people in whose memory they were named, events and people through the years. The group already has a growing archive of photographs, documents and maps from a variety of sources covering many centuries. A very good source in documentation is the listing of previous landowners in property deeds. In the ‘English Place Name Society’ publication covering Warwickshire they do not give an explanation of the origin of the name, only stating that it is indeterminate. We do have some theories on this that are put forward in this book, it will be interesting i f any further ideas are forthcoming.
The hamlet started in the parish of Allesley, the east – west boundary with neighbouring Stoneleigh being ‘Alles Brook’. This runs in the valley between Broad Lane and Upper / Lower Eastern Green Lane and was still used as a boundary line late in the 20″‘ century. Today the brook does not have the same volume of water flowing due to the urbanisation of the area.
Expansion slowly took place up the hills towards Broad Lane and Lower Eastern Green Lane and along these roads. After 1946 the rate of development quickened considerably, Godcakes, which used to be at T-junctions of roads, have mostly disappeared but there is still one at the junction of Broad Lane and Back Lane,
We hope that readers will respond to the contents, adding their own information, family photographs or anecdotes on the way their ancestors and family lived in the area. Childhood memories of how the area used to be are always interesting to other people who have arrived in the area in more recent times.
