Description
John Ashby has lived in Long Lane for over fifty years and in 2020, decided to write a brief social history of Brownshill Green and this makes up the main body of this work. He hastens to add that there is much more to be discovered concerning the area.
For this exercise he has studied the history of the properties on the south side of Wall Hill Road and Hawkes Mill Lane, up to Brown’s Lane. The route then continues up Wall Hill Road from the White Lion public house up to the Cottage and then across the road to Fearns, (Poor’s) Farm, on the north side, and back to the Smithy Cottage. There is one exception, and that is, because of its history and two characters who were attached to it, he has included the old Rose public house; the original building is now No. 110 Hawkes Mill Lane, just the other side of Brown’s Lane.
