SUMMARY:March 2026 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Talk: The Silk Route \nSpeaker: Roger Butler \nThis colourfull talk tells the story of a journey following the ancient Silk Route through Central Asia with an extraordinary range of landscapes and cultures. Travelling by bus\, truck and train the journey passes through the Himalayan chain and crosses Tibet to the fabled city of Lhasa. Wild mountain scenery then leads north to the edge of the vast Taklamakan desert (this translates as ‘go in and you won’t come out’!) where old oasis towns lead the way into Xinjiang – the westernmost part of China. From remote Kasgar\, rough roads head south over the world’s highest international border\, and through the jagged Karakorum mountains\, into Pakistan.

SUMMARY:October 2025 Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:AGM and: \nTalk: The Power of 3: The Story of Thomas Fowler. 1777-1843 by Pamela Vass \n‘Wooden Computer Invented in North Devon.’ A startling headline for a local paper. It continued\, ‘It is fascinating … to know that one of the original pioneers of the computer was a self taught bookseller and printer … who was born over 200 years ago. His name was Thomas Fowler.’ Thomas Fowler was a mathematician and engineer who invented a unique calculating machine that anticipated the computer age by more than a century. So why are so few people aware of this humble\, self-taught genius from a small market town in Devon? Tragically bad fortune and prejudice dogged his footsteps and his ground-breaking work lapsed into obscurity. Until now. \nThis multi media presentation includes my account of Fowler’s life and work\, video\, illustrations and readings from original documents of the time

SUMMARY:April 2024 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The speaker is Jean Renwick. The title is “Researching the Mourning Brooch\, a saga about Real People.” \nNovelist Jean Renwick’s extensively illustrated talk will reveal years of painstaking research behind the first two books of her family saga\, The Mourning Brooch\, based upon the lives of real Yorkshire people who lived in the second half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. After inheriting a mourning brooch\, Jean was intrigued to know who was Elizabeth Addy\, commemorated in the brooch\, and what happened to the two little girls she left behind. Acclaimed by Yorkshire historians for their authenticity\, the novels reveal how the girls’ lives took them and their children in very different directions. \nWith the help of newspaper archives\, Jean discovered scandals which have added drama to the story. You will hear how Jean’s research in Yorkshire and the USA revealed much about the personalities of the characters\, reflected in how she shaped the novels. \nMembers  may  have a piece of mourning jewellery to show on screen and share their own story. \nIf you want to read the book ahead of the talk\, it is available as a paperback or for Kindle on Amazon. More details can be found on www.jeanrenwickauthor.co.uk .
