Against All Odds
£6.50
Against All Odds covers a wide range of themes throughout the 20th century. Several are
concerned with the First World War including munitions workers, the so called canary girls
who often suffered for their patriotism by working with dangerous chemicals. The place of
Suffragettes and the pioneering women of the unions, who paved the way to equality for
women, are also investigated.

The derogatory term Dilutee was coined in the First World War to describe women who
took over engineering jobs in factories. This continued in the Second World War when they
were directed to jobs in factories around the country. Those who stayed at home or worked
in regular jobs unconnected with the war are not forgotten.
In the post war period, two women MPs with Coventry connections are featured. Those
with less illustrious careers, although equally important, worked in the field of social work,
the library and caring for others.
